Redefining Leadership: Beyond Work and Titles

Welcome back to Everyday Leader. Shannon and Conrad here. Today we want to go back to something foundational -- what do we actually mean by leadership? Because we find that in a lot of coaching and leadership development conversations, there is a pull to compartmentalize: leadership is the thing that happens at work, in a specific role, in a particular context. We want to push back on that.

We consider leadership to be how you choose to move through life -- intentionally, in all parts of it. It is a holistic view. Not just the work context, but also the family, the community, the personal. And we know that what happens in one part of your life affects every other part. You cannot fully separate them, no matter how hard you try.

And I feel resistance in my own body even as I say that -- because the pressure to compartmentalize is real. The pressure to show up at work like everything else is fine, or to leave the hard thing at home and perform leadership somewhere else. That compartmentalizing is exhausting. And it has a cost.

That is the cost -- and it is also the opportunity. The invitation for every leader is to let what is really going on be present. To use it as information. To process it, move through it, and allow it to be part of the whole of who you are as a leader. Not to perform wholeness, but to actually live it.

Here is what keeps coming up for me in this conversation: we know it intellectually. Most of us, somewhere, know that our leadership is everywhere. But the knowing and the living-it are very different things. The move from one to the other is not a solo one.

Do not go alone. That is one of the most important things we can say. Together is better -- not in a platitude way, but in a real, practical way. The capacity to live holistic leadership increases in relationship. In partnership. In the willingness to say: I need some help with this, even if I do not know exactly what kind of help I need yet.

You do not need to have the request fully formed. Sometimes just having someone witness what is true for you right now -- before you know what to do with it -- is enough to start. That is where it begins.

So the bow on this: leadership is holistic, it is in all aspects of your life, and it is messy and magnificent at the same time. That duality is not a problem to solve. It is part of what it means to lead. You do not have to have it figured out. You just have to keep showing up -- together.
