Rethinking Collaboration

Episode 16 · Teams · 14 min  ·  2025

Collaboration does not mean consensus, agreement, or folding your ideas into everyone else's. Real collaboration is generative -- it creates space for each person to hold a distinct perspective while staying in service of something larger. Shannon and Conrad introduce two practical moves from improv: blend and lead, and break and give.

What you’ll take away

Blend and lead: find something true in what someone just said, build on it, and move the conversation forward -- the "yes, and" of collaboration.

Break and give: the leader jumps in, names what needs to be said, and takes the conversation somewhere new -- while the relationship is designed to hold and follow that move.

Both moves require a foundation: a clear design alliance in the team that celebrates difference, holds shared purpose, and gives everyone permission to lead when the moment calls for it.
